Experience; Walk;
Exciting developments are happening at Papakai Park to develop and enhance the current walkways.
The park and tracks around the Hautapu River near the Taihape township are being developed and landscaped to enhance their natural beauty and connect all the existing tracks together.
There are many features within the plan which include walking, biking, horse treks, camping, swimming, fishing, and rest stops.
If you’re heading north, why not grab an ice cream and stop in at this quintessential kiwi swimming spot in Taihape. This river is characterized by well-defined pools and is also known for brown trout fly fishing.
There are walking tracks around the Hautapu River and rest area facilities which include showers and toilets.
Tourists will be greeted with kilometers of native bush, giant redwoods and towering papa cliffs surrounding the river.
Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary
Taihape; Experience; Walk;
NZ's most extensive remaining stands of kaikawaka (mountain cedar) grow on Hihitahi plateau. A 3-hour track to Seke's Hut (4 beds) at first climbs steeply through mid-altitude forest, then higher up kaikawaka tower over a canopy of broadleaf, horopito and wineberry. Stunning views of the plateau landscape and Ruapehu. A good place to see rifleman, NZ's smallest bird.
Hike to Zeke's Hut: From the carpark the track heads across farmland, skirting around a swampy piece and jumping a small stream on the way. It climbs up to reach a stile over a fence marking the forest boundary.
Enter the sanctuary and enjoy a short flat section before doing the main climb on the track. A steep piece in the middle needs a little more effort. Towards the top it begins to flatten out and passes Hihitahi Trig with fantastic views to the central North Island mountains.
The track continues on then heads down a grassy slip before sidling around and down into the valley to the old hut site. The new one is 200 m further on past this.
Zekes Hut is in the Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary which lies between Taihape and Waiouru. Travelling north, access to the track is off SH1 on the right beginning at a DOC sign about 17 km north of Taihape.
Sutherland Puriri Reserve
Hunterville; Experience; Walk;
A network of trails ranging from a 20 minute "Tall Timber" loop to a two-hour circuit around the reserve.
Tracks: There are three tracks in the 60 hectare reserve, from 20 minutes to an hour and fifteen minutes. The longest track (the blue track) circuits the whole reserve. Just inside the forest at the first track intersection a sign has been erected indicating the track network in the reserve.
Getting there: The reserve is located in the Turakina Valley, at the junction of Mangahoe and Turakina Valley Roads, 20kms west of Hunterville. Access to the main part of the reserve is over a stile at the southern-most point of the reserve off Turakina Valley Rd.
Facilities: Just inside the entrance there is a small picnic area consisting of three old power cable reels and rustic benches. A small bridge spans the stream running through the western corner of the reserve.
The locals: tui, shining cuckoo, NZ kingfisher, NZ pigeon.
The Sutherland-Puriri Reserve is home to several Maori food storage pits have been found on the forested part of the north-facing cliff of this reserve. It is believed that Maori would use the food from the pits when supplies ran short in the winter. Many of the tracks go around the storage pits.
The reserve is blanketed in a combination of kahikatea, tawa, kanuka and mapou forest. It is believed the kanuka forest and associated regeneration could have developed after a fire swept through the forest, around the turn of the century. Bird populations have been boosted in recent years because of intensive pest control in the area, for which volunteers are always welcome to help with. Now that pest populations have dropped considerably, the branch hopes to introduce new native birdlife into the reserve.

This nature reserve is well on its way to becoming a destination recreational space. Head out on this loop trail near Marton, Manawatu-Wanganui.
Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 40 min to walk the bottom dam or an hour to walk both dams. This trail is great for birding, hiking, running and horseback riding. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. There are also mountain bike trails that have been developed on the outer edge of the reserve and continue to be worked on to complete the full loop. These are grade 2-3 mountain bike trails.

Its life as a functional bridge has been under threat due to safety concerns, with the weight restriction reduced to 6000kgs, meaning vehicles any larger than a medium-sized motorhome can no longer cross the bridge. Today it’s a tourist icon, allowing visitors to enjoy the breathtaking river views, papa cliffs and surrounding beauty.

These magical and extremely intriguing Boulders are known as cannonball concretions made from mudstone. Some are particularly large.
It is believed that millions of years ago rivers carried sediment from eroding land out to sea. Shells and trees were also carried out to sea and were trapped in the sediment. The seawater contained dissolved chemicals and formed a cement around what was left of the buried shells and plant material. The cement in this case is calcium carbonate. The organic material seems to create a node for this process to occur.

Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary
Taihape; Experience; Walk;
